Show me another »Iam buying a houseboat that need the outdrives and transon fixed.?
The houseboat is a holiday mansion with twin inboard volvo penta engines. The outdrives and transons need repaired,Would anyone have a ballpark as to what it may cost to have this work done or is this something i could do myself knowing somethings.

Which Volvo engines do you have? The V-6 with 275/290 drives? Those things run forever......So I think you might be getting bad advise on replacing them......Volvo stern drives cut a larger hole for their drives, but the drive it self does not put any stress in the transom, it bolts to the bell housing. So, if someone one wants to bolt a on a Mercruiser you can do a lot of wood and glass work, OR a company in Delaware (and others) make an Aluminum plate that covers the old hole and is pre-cut for Mercruiser.....It's a bolt on operation. Secondly, used drives are available, put some new bellows and hoses, and you can do this for a fraction of the cost to re-power, which I wouldn't do on a houseboat. I've also seen a single 50 HP outboard mounted on a bracket. It gives you mobility with out the expense of re-powering. Just my take on things. I hope you'll head my advise.

- You better concern yourself with that transom issue. if you have cracks in the fiberglass you have water penetration. You should take an ice pick or thin screw driver and see just how soft the transom materials are . put the pick in an open crack and push firmly inward >> spongee resistance not good at all , you should have no penetration. You might as well check your Stringers too for same issues. Transom repair can take a turn for the worst easily. The out drives you can price on ebay from 3K to 7K for new depending on the unit Of course theres used at 1/2 the cost & maybe twice the problem or www.warmarine.com If I were you unless your prepared financially for this massive project , I'd buy a camper & a 18 ft center console and have the best of both worlds safely and more cost effectively0% 0 Votes
- TRANSOM is a noo no....buy damp tester from homedepot and hold against fibreglass it measures water intrusion....you can then see how far you have to strip fibreglass back to reinforce transom..big big job...good luck0% 0 Votes
- I am with the other two answerers, check that/those transom(s) first. You might be in for a huge repair getting them back to sound.
Inboard or Inboard/outboard engines?
Running gear on inboards are no big deal as long as the shafts are straight.
I/O's: what would be the problems? Bad gears? That could add up. Bad impellers? No big deal, can do yourself. Gimbal bearing? Not a big deal, but you have to pull the drives and getting them back in is tricky.

Do a good rebuild on the transom, put a pair of outboards on a sea drive plate and your set.
More reliable, less maintenance, especially with 4 strokes, and a ton of storage in the boat gained.
