Actually, many of the natural harbours and ports were started by the Vikings, and later the Normans - the precursors of the Brits, because Britain as a nation did not exist for hundreds of years.
However, the Brits could not have done anything unless they had something to work with.
And while we're on the subject, we in Ireland would like our native forests back, you took them to build London after the great fire, and to build your navy.

- The British did, they were very important too them. When Ireland was made the Free State, along with the oath and losing N.Ireland, All the harbours remained under British control and did not change over to Irish hands until the late 30's i believe at the end of the economic war with Britain I believe, but i could be wrong on that one! During WW!, one of the main reasons Britain considered re-invading Ireland was because of the importance of the ports and the fact Ireland would not let the Allies use them. They even suggested an offer of re-negotiating with Ireland over N.Ireland for use of the ports, but Dev said no! Interesting...
